NEW YORK AUDITIONS

What are New York Auditions ?

New York Auditions - Interview for actors conducted by a director or a casting director in order to determine if the actor fits the role. The actor should prepare a monologue or in most cases read from the project's sides.

Usually after a successful audition, the actor would be asked to come again for a callback.

An audition is a sample performance by an actor, singer, musician, dancer or other performing artist. It is used in the casting process to demonstrate the level and range of a performer's talent, and functions as a job interview for the performing arts. A typical audition involves the performer displaying their talent through a previously-memorized and rehearsed solo piece: for example, a monologue for actors or a song for a singer.

Some auditions involve cold reading, or performing a script that the actor is not familiar with. This is similar to many dance auditions, in which the focus is on learning new choreography, rather than showcasing prepared work.

For smaller roles in a large production, mass auditions are held at which many inexperienced or aspiring performers, most without agents or manager show up. These are popularly known as cattle calls, since the hopefuls are often kept together in one large room like a herd. American Idol is doing auditions by using this technique, since there are so many auditions.

New York Auditions Advice from Casting Directors :

Ask any casting director what matters most when an actor shows up to an audition. Most will say, "They need to be prepared." (Showing up on time can't hurt either.)

These should be obvious, but it's surprising how many actors make a bad impression with something as simple as inappropriate behavior. It can knock you out before you step into the ring. Remember: Casting directors already have the job — you don't. So you need to prove yourself to them, not the other way around.

Other suggestions we heard from CDs: Avoid unnecessary chit-chat. Don't linger in the room for too long after you read. Stay away from using most props. And avoid making physical contact with the casting director during your audition.

A feeling of desperation is another sure way not to get a callback. Never view an audition as nerve-wracking nightmare, or make it look that way. Consider each audition an opportunity: A chance to perform for an audience — albeit a small one. Or walk into the audition saying, "No matter what happens, I'll do the best I can today." Remember: The casting director is not here to judge you harshly; he or she simply wants to find the perfect person for the role. That could be you.

Actors sometimes seek out coaching for auditions, but primarily for large film/TV roles, or for admittance to an MFA program. Many believe it is worth the expense — if only for the boost in self-confidence. In last-minute emergencies, actors even resort to phone coaching, although that's not an ideal situation.

However, with or without coaching, one trap to avoid is too much preparation. Read the sides carefully but don't freeze your approach — you may be asked to change it. Longtime coach and acting teacher Craig Wallace says he never sends actors out 100 percent set for the audition. "If you're over prepared, you have no flexibility," he says. "And you don't know what 50 percent of the process is until you walk into the room.

"You can't have the piece controlling you. You have to leave room for the circumstances of where you're going to be."

New York Audition Tips !

  1. Come at least 15 minutes earlier to your cal time.
  2. Make sure not to eat at least two hours before your call time.
  3. Try not to talk with anyone in the audition room. Kindly ask them not to disturb your preparation. No, it is not rude, it is necessary.
  4. When you come into the audition, it is strongly recommended to arrive as the character. Remember that this is why you are here for. Your own persona can come out only after the casting director thanked you for coming.
  5. If you require to bring your own monologue, always choose something that feels familiar to you. Don't take inaccuracy risks when you auditioning. Leave the risks in your acting class.
  6. Choose a strong piece that don't exceed 5 minutes. A good efficient length would be 2-3 minutes.
  7. Remember that there was some action before the character begun to speak. Think what happen before your character speaks its first line. It will help you get into the character faster and most likely eliminate some disturbing butterflies.
  8. Don't rush your lines. Even if you feel you lost it. You are not a mind reader, and therefore don't know what the casting director is looking for.
  9. Many times the casting director would tell you to say your name to the camera. Sometimes this is the only thing you have to do in your audition. Don't take this thing lightly. It is the way you present yourself, even with one line that can get you the audition.
  10. BELIEVE.

NEW YORK MODELING AUDITIONS

What are New York Modeling Auditions ?

Modeling Auditions are different from Acting Auditions. As a model it is all about your look. And by saying that, it is not necessary that you need to look good. There are many models that are far from looking good, but they do look interesting and can carry themselves in a very unique way.

How to start a New York Modeling Career ?

Start by a research on auditions in your local area. Most of major model casting is done in California, New York, and Europe. Every city has a few well established modeling agencies that are affiliated with major players in the industry. Not like acting, that one can promote himself and doesn't always need an agent, a model must have an agent, If you want to start a modeling career, then you need to start auditioning for a few different agencies and see what they say. The key to success here is to pick an agent that is well known and established! Ask for their references and credentials before signing any contracts.

New York Modeling Training

Modeling might seem like an easy profession, however it is not. It is true that like in any other profession some make it without any training, but if you are really into modeling, you need to learn a few basic things. Many models don't get the job because of lack of training and modeling experience. You can be the best looking individual for the spot, but someone else with more training and experience will take it. At least get some basic training from a specialized modeling school. The industry has many standards that you need to follow when you audition for major players. If you are considering modeling as full time career then you must invest into a portfolio and schooling. Great training cost good money, but be careful in your selections there are many scams.

New York Modeling Portfolio & Resume

Unlike headshots which an actor uses, a model must go through various photo-shoots and create a modeling portfolio. Putting together a processional modeling portfolio is a MUST! A portfolio should have variety of pictures, black / white and color, different poses, and a several different looks (swimwear,  business, casual, etc.) Your portfolio is probably your most important tool that will sell you in the entertainment Industry. Remember modeling casting directors and agents will only look through your portfolio once, so you have only one chance to capture their interest. You should spend anywhere between $800-$2000 depending on the photographer. The best photographers also have awesome connections so there's a chance to be referred to a great modeling agency. All your pictures must be presented in an organized order. A modeling resume is much simpler. Just have all your current contact information, your height, size, weight, and clothing measurements. Be sure to include all the training and work you were involved in.

OPEN AUDITIONS IN NY

What are New York Open Auditions ?

New York Open Auditions are a form of invitations to attend a casting interview conducted by a director or a casting director. Not like scheduled Acting Auditions, an open call will usually have no screening before, such as: headshot , resume , or demo reel submissions.

Open Audition Calls most likely have a lot of more actors attending. It's first come first served kinda of thing.

Many professional actors don't like open auditions as much as schedule auditions for many reasons. The wait time is usually much longer, the crowed is usually an amateur one.

There are however many professional productions that use open auditions calls because they have to go into production very quick. Those productions are usually theatre shows and musicals like Broadway productions.

New York Open Audition Tips !

  • Show up Early - Try to get there as early as you can. Casting directors are usually fresh in the early stage, and get very anxious in the mid to late stages.
  • While you Wait - Relax, allow yourself to loosen up and prepare.
  • Don't be loud - Try to keep it down while waiting for your turn to audition. Others are trying to focus on their audition and so should you. You don't want to be remembered as anything but a good performer.
  • Come prepared - Production offices are always short on pens, sides and so on. Bring your own.

NY Auditions - A True Story

True Story -- A NY Theatre Audition

If this were a movie, you would go to a Broadway audition and would be alone on a giant, bare stage. The director and producers would be invisible voices in the auditorium, the house lights would be off and you would be alone, in the spotlight. You would take a deep breath, feel the warmth of the light and begin your monologue. Stage hands in the wings would be silenced by your depth of skill. You would finish and really feel it. You owned it and the moment was yours. It was magic. It was also completely fiction!

The truth is, renting a theatre for a New York audition would cost a fortune. You're never going to get stage lights for an audition (do you know how many watts those things use?). And you're lucky if anyone is quiet during your speech, let alone while you're recovering from your moment.

There are basically two types of NY theatre auditions: the open call - where anyone and everyone shows up - and an audition you've been invited to attend directly from someone involved in the production or through a casting director or agent.

Personally, I love auditions that I am called in for. It means they've received my headshot or seen me in a showcase, and something about me or my photo strikes the powers-that-be the right way.

Once I was called in to audition for an off-off Broadway play being produced by a few recent Juilliard grads. The character was my age and the play's action took place in my home state. I'm pretty sure I found the audition notice in one of the trade publications and sent along a tailored cover letter and headshot. Note: In casting notices it's common to see "h/r." That means an 8X10 with the resume stapled or printed directly on the photo.

They left me a message on my cell phone. A lot of actors have given up on answering services and beepers since cell phones are always with you. I was told to never put my home number on a headshot because you never know where your photos will end up (i.e. the trash can in the alley behind the casting office).

So I'm getting ready for the audition. I pop in my contacts and perfect my mascara. Of course I spend about two hours picking something to wear. Note: Have a generic audition outfit ready at all times: less stress.

I get to the audition address about 20 minutes early. I need some time to breath and relax. Since I was called in, I was given an actual time slot. If I wasn't, there would have been a sign-in sheet. Here's a little trick. If there are sides (a script) at the audition that you will be asked to read, and a sign in sheet that the auditioners are using to call you in, don't sign in the minute you get there. They use the sign in sheet to make sure people are seen in the order they arrived. If you have time and there's a constant flow of people, not signing in right away will buy you more time with the script. But this doesn't work for every audition, and the power should be used wisely.

My call time was for 2:15. I had a monologue prepared and there were sides (surprise!) at the audition. The only thing I was told to prepare was one monologue. But, I'd been to enough auditions to know that: 1. Never have only one monologue. 2. Always expect to be given something to read, even if told you won't be.

So I grab the script. So much for my 15 minutes to relax. Turns out it's a poem. Actually, it's a sonnet. It's Shakespeare! And at the top is typed an instruction which goes something like this: "Your character is Appalachian and is the victim of domestic violence." What? Does that mean I should timidly do an accent? I'm starting to get nervous. Breathe!

The holding area for the actors is basically a 14x3 hallway with metal folding chairs and a water cooler. I grab some water and plop into a chair. Script in hand, I'm thinking of how being abused and southern would affect me and how I should read the script.

Just then, a door opens and I hear my name. It hasn't been 15 minutes. They're running quick. So I'm up. I grab my picture and resume even though I know they have one. The rule is to always, always bring one with you.

I enter the room smiling at the guy holding a clipboard with my name on it. The room is literally a mid-sized white box with a card table at one end. There's no camera. Around the table, holding little piles of headshots, are three guys. They're pretty young - early twenties. I'm not sure if this should make me less nervous or not. I mean they're Juilliard drama grads. They should know a bad actor when they see one. Nervous again.

I see there's a chair set up for the actor. It's probably 20 feet from them. The distance seems too far for the space. So I sit, but in my head I think I should stay standing.

Audition talk ensues. Hello. How are you. Do you have a headshot? Great, I'll take it. Tell me about your background. Where did you study? Do you have a monologue? Did you pick up the script? Do you have any questions?

Whenever you're ready.

That's my cue for the monologue. I stand up. I want to feel connected to the floor through my feet - call me crazy, but it comforts me. I pick a focus, which is hard, because in a plain, white room there is nothing on the wall to look at - not even a recognizable dent.

That was great. Do you want to read the script now?

Oh, here it goes. What followed was a blur, but I'm pretty sure I reached a beautiful place of truth and vulnerability.

That was beautiful! Would you like to do it again? This time really bring out the inner Appalachian in you. You're desperate but you don't know it.

Bring out the inner Appalachian? I wasn't sure what that meant and probably should have asked for more direction (they don't mind questions if they're legit). Instead, I just turned my accent up a little.

Nice! That's exactly the quality we're looking for. Really great work. Thank you for coming by. Please leave the script on the chair outside, we didn't make extra copies.

That's it? I have no clue if I did okay. I know I was truthful, but is it what they wanted? On my way to the door I hear one last question.

Oh, what is your schedule? We want to know if you have any conflicts.

They wanted to make sure I wasn't going out of town or had to work during scheduled rehearsals.

So that's a basic New York audition. You show up. Do you your thing. You're given some feedback (hopefully), then you're thanked and left waiting for a callback or an offer for the role.

The moral of the story is: be in a constant state of preparedness.

  • Have your monologues ready at all times (two classical, two contemporary - one comedic and one dramatic of each.)
  • Have your headshot with you.
  • Show up a little early.
  • Make sure everything beforehand runs smoothly (and yes, that includes going to acting class & studying.)
  • Be ready for anything.

You never know when you'll have to be an abused Appalachian who likes Shakespeare.
